Tojinbo Cliffs

Dramatic volcanic sea cliffs on Fukui's rugged coastline

Overview of Tojinbo Cliffs

Tojinbo Cliffs are one of Japan’s most striking natural landmarks, featuring towering basalt column formations that plunge dramatically into the Sea of Japan. Located in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, these geological wonders were formed over 12 million years ago through volcanic activity, creating five-sided and six-sided rock columns that rise up to 25 meters above the crashing waves below. The site is designated as a National Natural Monument and represents one of only three places in the world where this type of columnar jointing can be found at such a large scale.

The cliffs stretch approximately one kilometer along the coastline and offer breathtaking views, particularly during sunset when the rugged basalt takes on golden and amber hues. Visitors can walk along the cliff-top pathways to view the formations from various angles, or take a sightseeing boat tour that departs from the base to experience the towering columns from sea level. The area also features the Tojinbo Tower, an observation deck offering panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and, on clear days, distant mountain ranges.

Beyond its geological significance, Tojinbo holds cultural importance in Japanese folklore and has been featured in numerous films and literature. The nearby Tojinji Temple and the distinctive red Tojinbo Observation Deck provide additional points of interest for visitors exploring the area. Local restaurants serving fresh seafood, including Echizen crab — a regional specialty — line the approach to the cliffs.

Best Times To Visit Tojinbo Cliffs

The cliffs are accessible year-round, but the most popular visiting period is from April to November when weather conditions are generally favorable. Catching the cliffs as the sun sets offers breathtaking views, and is generally considered one of the best times to see the cliffs. Summer months (July-August) offer warm temperatures ideal for boat tours, though this is also the busiest season. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) provide comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds and particularly stunning photography opportunities during golden hour.
