A Deep Dive on Traditional Women’s Fashion in Japan
The Yayoi Museum in Tokyo will host an exhibition showcasing the evolution of women’s hakama fashion.

Hakama, skirt-like trousers worn over kimono, are usually reserved for special occasions in modern times. They are traditionally a masculine garment, but have become a standard women’s style for university graduation ceremonies. For those who have wondered where this custom arose from, or have wished to further explore traditional Japanese fashion, the “Haikara Modern Hakama Style” exhibition will display a comprehensive look at hakama’s historical evolution with female students and working women.

The exhibition will cover the transitional period from traditional Japanese attire to Western-style clothing, and explore the cultural significance of the garment through paintings, photographs and actual hakama from the Meiji era to the present.
The exhibition will run from January 3 to March 29. The Yayoi Museum will be closed on Mondays. A ticket to the exhibit grands admission to both the Yayoi Museum and the Takehisa Yumeji Museum on the same day. The museum only accepts cash.
