Shitennoji Temple

One of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples and a cornerstone of Osaka's spiritual heritage

Japan’s First Buddhist Temple

Shitennoji Temple stands as one of Japan’s most historically significant Buddhist temples, founded in 593 A.D. by Prince Shotoku, a pivotal figure in introducing Buddhism to Japan. Located in Osaka’s Tennoji ward, this ancient temple complex represents Japan’s first officially established Buddhist temple, predating even Kyoto’s famous religious sites.

The temple’s architectural layout follows the traditional Shitennoji-style arrangement, featuring a central five-story pagoda surrounded by a covered corridor. The main hall, lecture hall and stunning vermillion pagoda create a striking visual composition that has been carefully preserved through centuries of reconstruction following fires and war damage. The current structures, rebuilt in 1963, faithfully recreate the original sixth-century design using concrete for durability.

Visitors can explore the expansive temple grounds, which include beautiful gardens, a treasure house displaying Buddhist artifacts and the Gokuraku-jodo Garden representing the Pure Land paradise. On the 21st of each month, the temple hosts a popular flea market where vendors sell antiques, vintage clothing and local crafts. The temple also features seasonal events, including the Wasso Festival in November, celebrating ancient cultural exchange between Japan and Korea.

Best Times To Visit Shitennoji Temple

Spring (late March to early April) offers spectacular cherry blossom viewing within the temple grounds, while autumn (November) provides vibrant foliage and the lively Wasso Festival. The 21st of each month is particularly recommended for experiencing the bustling flea market atmosphere, arriving early morning for the best finds.

Summer months can be hot and humid, but the temple grounds provide shaded areas for respite. Winter visits offer peaceful, contemplative experiences with fewer crowds. For photographers, early morning light creates beautiful illumination of the pagoda, while sunset casts a warm glow over the vermillion structures.
