Ritsurin Garden

Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku Region

One of Japan's finest feudal-era stroll gardens, framed by Mount Shiun and centuries of careful cultivation

Ritsurin Garden Overview

Ritsurin Garden is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful traditional Japanese gardens in the country, located in Takamatsu city, Kagawa Prefecture on the island of Shikoku.

The garden’s origins date to the mid-16th century, when it was developed as a private retreat by the Matsudaira clan, the feudal lords of the Takamatsu domain. Over roughly 100 years of careful cultivation across multiple generations of lords, the garden reached its present form by the mid-Edo period. It covers approximately 75 hectares, making it one of the largest feudal-era stroll gardens in Japan, and incorporates six ponds, thirteen hills and the forested slopes of Mount Shiun as a natural backdrop — a technique known as shakkei, or borrowed scenery.

The garden is divided into a southern section, which preserves the classical feudal garden design, and a northern section, which has a more open, park-like character. The southern section is the more celebrated of the two, featuring meticulously pruned pine trees — some over 200 years old — gracefully arched stone bridges, teahouses and carefully composed views across the garden’s central ponds. Fukushima-tei, one of the garden’s traditional teahouses, offers matcha and seasonal Japanese sweets to visitors in a serene lakeside setting.

Best Times To Visit Ritsurin Garden

Ritsurin Garden’s landscape and atmosphere shift beautifully throughout the year.

Spring brings cherry blossoms, plum blossoms and wisteria bloom in succession across the garden, and the soft pink of the sakura reflected in the central ponds is one of Ritsurin’s most celebrated seasonal sights. Late March to mid-April is peak cherry blossom season.

Summer brings lush greenery and the rich scent of lotus flowers blooming across the ponds. The garden opens early in summer, making a morning visit before the heat of the day particularly pleasant. Evening illumination events are occasionally held during summer, transforming the garden into a dramatically lit nocturnal landscape.

Autumn is widely considered the best season to visit. The maple trees surrounding the ponds and pathways turn vivid shades of red and gold, creating a striking contrast with the dark green of the ancient pine trees and the calm water surfaces. Autumn foliage at Ritsurin is among the most celebrated in Shikoku.
