Overview of Nihondaira Plateau
Nihondaira Plateau is one of Shizuoka Prefecture’s most celebrated viewpoints, situated in Shizuoka city at an elevation of approximately 307 meters. Designated one of Japan’s “100 Famous Views” (Nihon Hyakkei) and selected as one of the country’s top scenic spots by the Japanese government, the plateau offers a remarkable 360-degree panorama that takes in Mount Fuji to the northwest, Suruga Bay and the Izu Peninsula to the south and the verdant Abe River Valley and Southern Alps to the north.
The plateau sits atop a broad, flat-topped hill covered in lush green tea fields — a quintessentially Shizuoka landscape — and is home to the Nihondaira Hotel and several observation facilities, including the Nihondaira Dream Terrace, a modern observation deck that opened in 2018 and offers unobstructed views in all directions. The terrace has quickly become one of the most popular photography spots in the region.
Nihondaira is also the upper terminus of the Nihondaira Ropeway, which descends to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine on the adjacent peak — one of Japan’s most historically significant Shinto shrines and the original burial site of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Combining a visit to the plateau with a ropeway descent to Kunozan is one of the most popular itineraries in the Shizuoka area, offering both natural beauty and cultural depth in a single half-day excursion.
The plateau is surrounded by walking trails and tea plantation paths, and a large park area with picnic facilities makes it a popular destination for families and day-trippers from central Shizuoka.
Best Times To Visit Nihondaira Plateau
Nihondaira rewards visitors in every season, with the quality of views and surrounding landscape shifting dramatically throughout the year.
Winter (December to February) is widely considered the best season for views, particularly of Mount Fuji. The cold, dry air produces exceptional visibility, and the snow-capped peak is at its most dramatic when seen from the plateau’s observation points. Clear winter mornings offer some of the sharpest sightlines across Suruga Bay to the Izu Peninsula.
Spring (March to May) brings cherry blossoms to the plateau’s park areas and the surrounding hillsides, and the new tea harvest season begins in late April. The combination of fresh green tea fields, blossoming trees and clear skies makes spring one of the most visually rewarding times to visit.
Autumn (October to November) offers comfortable walking temperatures and vivid foliage across the surrounding hills and Abe River Valley below. Autumn skies frequently deliver excellent Fuji visibility, and the golden and red tones of the season complement the plateau’s sweeping views.
Summer (June to August) can bring haze and cloud cover that reduces visibility, though the lush green landscape and cooling breezes at elevation make the plateau a pleasant escape from the heat of central Shizuoka. Early mornings offer the best chance of clear views during this season.
