Naruto Whirlpools Overview
The Naruto Whirlpools are one of Japan’s most dramatic natural phenomena, located in the Naruto Strait between Naruto city in Tokushima Prefecture and Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture. Formed by the powerful tidal currents that flow between the Pacific Ocean and the Seto Inland Sea, the whirlpools can reach up to 20–30 meters in diameter, making them among the largest tidal whirlpools in the world.
The strait narrows to just 1.3 kilometers at its tightest point, forcing massive volumes of water through at high speed during tidal shifts. This dramatic pressure difference generates the swirling vortexes that have captivated visitors for centuries. The whirlpools are at their most powerful during spring and autumn tides, when the difference between high and low tide is greatest.
Visitors can experience the whirlpools from two vantage points: the Uzu-no-Michi walkway, a glass-floored observation deck suspended beneath the Onaruto Bridge 45 meters above the water, or from one of the sightseeing boats that venture directly into the strait. Each offers a distinctly different and equally thrilling perspective on the churning waters below.

The whirlpools occur throughout the year, but their size and power vary considerably depending on the tidal cycle. The largest and most impressive whirlpools form during spring and autumn, when tidal ranges peak — roughly March to May and September to November. During these periods, the vortexes are most likely to reach their maximum diameter.
Within any given day, the best viewing times align with the tidal shift schedule, which changes daily. Weekday visits are recommended to avoid crowds, particularly during Japan’s Golden Week (late April to early May) and the summer school holiday period in August, when the area sees significantly higher foot traffic.
