Overview of Myoryuji Temple
Myoryuji Temple, popularly known as the Ninja Temple, is one of Kanazawa’s most fascinating historical landmarks. Despite its nickname, the temple has no actual connection to ninja — the name comes from its remarkable array of hidden rooms, trap doors, secret staircases and concealed passageways that were designed to confuse and deter enemies.
Built in 1643 during the Edo period, the temple was constructed by the third lord of the Kaga Domain, Maeda Toshitsune, as a place of worship dedicated to the Nichiren sect of Buddhism. The Kaga Domain was one of the most powerful outside of the Tokugawa shogunate, and the temple’s elaborate defensive design reflects the political tensions of the era. Fearful of the shogunate’s suspicions, Maeda was prohibited from constructing a castle, so Myoryuji served as a fortified outpost instead.
From the outside, the structure appears to be a modest two-story building. Inside, however, it contains seven floors and 29 rooms, connected by a labyrinth of narrow staircases, hidden corridors and disorienting layouts. A hidden well in the interior is said to have served as an escape tunnel leading to Kanazawa Castle. The temple remains an active place of worship today, adding an extra layer of reverence to every visit.
Best Times To Visit Myoryuji Temple
Myoryuji Temple can be visited year-round, but spring and autumn are the most scenic seasons. Cherry blossoms typically bloom in Kanazawa in late March to early April, making it an especially beautiful time to explore the temple’s surroundings. Autumn foliage, usually peaking in mid to late November, provides another stunning backdrop.
Summer visits are popular but can be humid, so early morning tours are advisable. Winter in Kanazawa often brings heavy snowfall — a uniquely atmospheric time to visit, though some access routes may be affected. Regardless of season, early reservations are strongly recommended, as tours fill up quickly.
