Kuroshio Market Overview
Tucked inside the Wakayama Marina City complex — a 49-hectare artificial island on the Wakayama coastline — Kuroshio Market is the largest seafood market in western Japan run directly by a fishing cooperative. Designed in the image of a 1950s shopping street, the market’s retro Showa-era aesthetic makes it as photogenic as it is delicious.
The market takes its name from the Kuroshio Current, a warm ocean current that runs along Japan’s Pacific coast, bringing nutrient-rich waters that have supported abundant marine life in the region for centuries. Wakayama’s position along this current has made it one of Japan’s most important fishing prefectures, particularly for tuna.
The star attraction is the daily tuna cutting show, held 3 times a day at 11:00, 12:30 and 15:00. A skilled fishmonger expertly breaks down a whole fresh tuna — caught at nearby Katsuura or Kushimoto ports — while narrating the process in Japanese. After the show, the cuts are sold on the spot as sashimi, sushi or kaisendon (seafood rice bowls), with otoro (fatty tuna belly) being especially popular.
Beyond tuna, the market’s stalls carry seasonal fresh fish, live seafood, dried goods, local sake and Wakayama specialty products. For a more hands-on experience, visitors can purchase fresh seafood and grill it themselves at the outdoor BBQ terrace by the water.

Best Times To Visit Kuroshio Market
Kuroshio Market is open year-round and worth a visit in any season, but the experience changes with what’s in season. Spring and autumn bring the widest variety of fresh seafood and comfortable temperatures for outdoor BBQ dining. Summer can be warm but lively, and the seaside setting makes for a pleasant coastal outing. Winters are mild in Wakayama compared to much of Japan, and the cold months bring particularly rich, fatty fish.
Regardless of season, arriving early is recommended to beat the lunchtime crowds. If watching the tuna cutting show is a priority — and it should be — plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before one of the three daily sessions to secure a good spot near the front. Confirm show times on the official website before your visit, as schedules may vary.
