A Unesco World Heritage Site Within Nara Park
Kofuku-ji Temple stands as one of Nara’s most significant cultural landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally established in 669 in Kyoto, the temple was relocated to its current location in Nara in 710 when the capital moved. As the family temple of the powerful Fujiwara clan, Kofuku-ji once boasted over 175 buildings and wielded considerable influence during the Nara and Heian periods.
The temple’s most recognizable structure is its Five-Story Pagoda, which towers at 50.1 meters, making it the second tallest pagoda in Japan after Toji Temple’s in Kyoto. Originally built in 730, the current pagoda dates to 1426 after multiple reconstructions due to fires. This national treasure has become an enduring symbol of Nara, visible from various points throughout the city.
Within the temple grounds, visitors can explore the Central Golden Hall (Chukondo), rebuilt in 2018 to its original eighth-century grandeur, and the Eastern Golden Hall (Tokondo), which houses important Buddhist statues. The National Treasure Museum displays an impressive collection of Buddhist art and sculptures, including the famous three-faced, six-armed Ashura statue. While the temple grounds are free to enter, admission fees apply for the museum and certain halls.

Best Times To Visit Kofuku-ji Temple
Kofuku-ji Temple welcomes visitors year-round, with each season offering distinct appeal. Spring (late March to early April) brings cherry blossoms that frame the pagoda beautifully, while autumn (November) transforms the grounds with vibrant red and gold foliage. These peak seasons attract larger crowds but provide spectacular photo opportunities.
For a quieter experience, visit during weekday mornings or the winter months (December to February), when fewer tourists are present and the pagoda stands dramatically against clear winter skies. The temple grounds are illuminated during special evening events, creating magical nighttime viewing opportunities.
