Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnl Overview
Tucked into the mountains of Tokamachi city in Niigata Prefecture, Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel — also known as the Tunnel of Light — is one of Japan’s most visually stunning destinations. The gorge itself stretches 12.5 kilometers and has been designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. It stands among Japan’s three great gorges, alongside Kurobe Gorge and Osugi Gorge, with towering cliffs forming a dramatic V-shaped canyon over the Kiyotsu River.
The gorge was designated a Natural Monument in April 1941 and became part of Joshinetsu Kogen National Park in September 1949. The striking rock formations — called columnar jointing — were created as magma cooled into igneous rock over millions of years, gradually pushed to the surface by tectonic activity and carved by the Kiyotsu River.
As part of the 2018 Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, MAD Architects was invited to revitalize the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel — a 750-meter passageway that cuts through the gorge’s distinctive rock formations. Drawing on the five elements of nature (wood, earth, metal, fire, and water), the design transforms several points along the tunnel into architectural art spaces. The highlight is Panorama Station at the tunnel’s far end, where a shallow reflective pool mirrors the gorge entrance in a scene that changes dramatically with each season.
The walk through the tunnel is completely flat, making it accessible for visitors of all ages. A round trip takes about an hour, with four viewpoints along the way offering up-close looks at the gorge and its columnar rock formations. The entrance facility also houses a cafe, souvenir shop, and a footbath fed by natural spring water from within the tunnel.
Best Times To Visit Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel
Each season offers something different at the gorge: brilliantly colored foliage in autumn, a serene snow-covered canyon in winter, budding trees and wildlife in spring, and lush greenery alongside a calm river in summer. Autumn — particularly late October through early November — is the most popular time to visit, when the colors reflected in Panorama Station’s pool are at their most spectacular.
Summer is a great option for those looking to escape the heat, as the tunnel stays cool year-round. During peak periods, entry may require advance reservations, so it’s best to check the official website ahead of your visit. Note that the tunnel may close due to heavy snowfall in winter.
