Kanazawa's landmark museum where architecture and avant-garde art collide

Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art Overview

The Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art is one of Japan’s most celebrated contemporary art institutions. Opened in October 2004 and designed by the renowned architectural firm SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa), the museum’s transparent, cylindrical building is an artwork in itself. Its glass exterior allows visitors to see in from all sides, blurring the boundary between the city and the collection within.

Located in the heart of Kanazawa, the museum sits adjacent to the Kenroku-en garden — one of Japan’s three great gardens — making it an easy and rewarding pairing for visitors to the city. The permanent collection spans painting, sculpture, video, and installation art from Japanese and international artists, with a strong emphasis on immersive and participatory works. The most iconic piece is Leandro Erlich’s Swimming Pool, a permanent installation that creates the illusion of people walking underwater, and draws visitors from across the globe.

The museum is operated by the city of Kanazawa and is recognized internationally for its innovative programming and commitment to making contemporary art accessible to all ages.

Best Times To Visit Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art

The museum is open year-round, making it a reliable stop regardless of season. Spring (late March to May) is an especially popular time to visit Kanazawa, when the cherry blossoms in nearby Kenroku-en are in bloom, and the city sees an influx of tourists. If you prefer fewer crowds, the quieter months of late autumn (November) and winter offer a more relaxed experience — and Kanazawa’s snow-dusted streets have a beauty all their own.
