Hoshitoge Rice Terraces Overview

Tucked into the hillsides of Tokamachi city in Niigata Prefecture, the Hoshitoge Rice Terraces are a patchwork of around 200 paddies spreading across a mountainside — a living portrait of rural Japan that has captivated photographers and travelers from around the world.

Niigata is one of Japan’s premier rice-producing prefectures, and its seasonal precipitation, ample sunlight, and wide temperature range provide paddies with the fertile conditions needed to produce rice with a glistening color and fine flavor. Hoshitoge sits at the heart of this agricultural tradition, part of the Echigo Matsudai rice terrace group — a collection recognized as one of Japan’s Top 100 magnificent sights.

It’s important to remember that these are working fields, not a theme park. The terraces are privately owned land cultivated by local farmers as their livelihood, passed down from ancestors and carefully preserved. Visitors are asked to view the landscape from designated roadside viewpoints and refrain from entering the fields.

Best Times To Visit Hoshitoge Rice Terraces

The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons: spring (late April to mid-May) brings “water mirrors,” when paddies filled with water reflect the sky and surrounding scenery; summer turns the hillside a lush green as rice grows; autumn delivers golden hues; and winter drapes everything in snow.

For the most striking views, arriving 30 minutes to an hour before sunrise is recommended, particularly in spring and autumn, when there is a higher chance of witnessing an early-morning sea of clouds — mist drifting over the terraces with mountain silhouettes rising behind it.

June and late October through November are especially popular with photographers, when the flooded or post-harvest fields shimmer in the early light. Winter visits are possible but note that the path up to the terraces is narrow and winding and may not be accessible during heavy snowfall.

How To Get to Hoshitoge Rice Terraces

Hoshitoge is about 20 minutes away by taxi or rental car from Matsudai Station. Rental e-bikes are also available at Tokamachi Station’s tourist association for a scenic, roughly 30–40 minute ride through the countryside. There is a parking lot at the first observation deck accommodating around 20 cars, located just steps from the main viewpoint.
