Hokkaido’s Premier Lavender Destination
Farm Tomita is a sprawling flower farm located in Furano, Hokkaido, renowned for its breathtaking lavender fields. Established in 1958 as a family-owned lavender farm, it has grown into one of Japan’s most iconic floral attractions, drawing visitors from around the world who come to witness the spectacular blooms against the backdrop of the Tokachi mountain range.
The farm features several distinct flower fields, with the most famous being the Rainbow Field (irodori batake), where rows of lavenders, poppies, lupines and other colorful flowers create a natural patchwork quilt effect across the hillside. Beyond the visual spectacle, Farm Tomita offers visitors the chance to experience lavender in multiple forms — from the signature lavender soft serve ice cream to an array of lavender-scented products including essential oils, soaps and sachets available at the on-site shops. The farm maintains free admission year-round, making it an accessible destination for travelers exploring Hokkaido’s countryside.
The surrounding Furano area complements a visit to Farm Tomita with its own agricultural charm, including nearby farms, wineries and the picturesque town of Biei, known for its rolling patchwork hills. Together, these destinations form one of Hokkaido’s most popular summer touring routes.
Best Times To Visit Farm Tomita
The optimal time to visit Farm Tomita is from mid-July to early August when the lavender fields reach peak bloom, typically around July 15-20. During this period, the farm celebrates with its Lavender Festival, and the fields are at their most photogenic. Early July also offers beautiful displays as the flowers begin blooming, with fewer crowds than the peak period.
While lavender is the main attraction, the farm remains open year-round and offers seasonal variety. Spring brings tulips and poppies in May and June, while autumn showcases salvias and marigolds through September. Even winter visitors can explore the snow-covered grounds and visit the greenhouses and shops, though the outdoor fields are dormant.
For the best experience during peak season, arrive early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday crowds and capture the fields in optimal lighting conditions.
