Chureito Pagoda

Japan's most photographed view combining a five-story pagoda with Mount Fuji

A Modern Memorial with Ancient Roots

Perched on a mountainside overlooking Fujiyoshida City, Chureito Pagoda offers one of the most iconic views in Japan. This striking five-story vermillion pagoda frames Mount Fuji perfectly, creating a scene that epitomizes traditional Japanese aesthetics. Part of Arakurayama Sengen Park and the historic Arakura Sengen Shrine, the pagoda has become internationally famous as a photography destination, especially when surrounded by cherry blossoms in spring or vibrant autumn foliage.

While the Arakura Sengen Shrine dates back to 705 CE, Chureito Pagoda itself is relatively recent, built in 1963 as a peace memorial. The pagoda honors the citizens of Fujiyoshida who lost their lives in conflicts from the late 19th century through World War II. Modeled after Osaka’s Shitennoji Temple, its five stories rise elegantly against the mountainside.

Reaching the pagoda requires climbing 398 stone steps from the shrine’s main buildings, a 20-minute ascent through cedar trees. An alternative gentler slope zigzags up the hillside for those who prefer to avoid stairs. The climb rewards visitors with an observation deck offering unobstructed panoramic views across Fujiyoshida City to Mount Fuji beyond.

The site’s popularity surged after Mount Fuji’s UNESCO World Heritage designation in 2013. Today it draws photographers and visitors from around the world seeking that quintessential Japanese image — the red and white pagoda with Mount Fuji’s symmetrical cone rising majestically in the background. The observation deck can become extremely crowded during peak seasons, particularly during cherry blossom festivals in mid-April and autumn color season in early November.

Best Times To Visit Chureito Pagoda

Visit early morning for the clearest Mount Fuji views and smallest crowds. Weather conditions dramatically affect visibility — Mount Fuji is most visible between November and April when skies tend to be clearer. Summer months often bring haze and clouds that obscure the mountain. Check weather forecasts and webcams before traveling.

Cherry blossom season in mid-April attracts the largest crowds, with potential time limits enforced at the observation deck and parking fees in effect. For a similar spectacular view with fewer people, visit during autumn foliage season in early November. Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends year-round.

The park is open 24 hours, allowing for sunrise and sunset photography. Many photographers recommend arriving before dawn or staying for sunset to capture the mountain in optimal lighting conditions.
