Mori Arts Center Gallery Presents: A Special Moomin Exhibit
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Tove Jansson’s beloved Moomin novels, the Mori Arts Center Gallery will host a special exhibit in cooperation with Finland’s Helsinki Art Museum (HAM).
About the Moomin Exhibit
Though the Moomins are Finnish, they’ve been extremely popular in Japan since the 1960s. Japan is even home to Moominvalley Park, the first official Moomin theme park outside of Finland.
“Tove Jansson and the Moomins Exhibition: Searching for the Special One” will run from July 16 to September 17 on the 52nd floor of the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower. The exhibit will explore Jansson’s creative process through over 300 original drawings, paintings and sketches. Jansson’s artistic evolution is displayed through her early work and caricatures from before and after World War II. Discover the charm and magic of Jansson and Moomin.
An audio guide, narrated by actress Anne Watanabe, will be available as a guide throughout the exhibit. Watanabe will star in the upcoming Japanese-Finnish co-produced drama Blood & Sweat, scheduled to air on Wowow and Nelonen Media in 2026.
Collaboration Cafe
For a limited time during the exhibition period, The Sun & The Moon Cafe will be serving special plates, sweets and drinks inspired by the Moomins. Meals include a Nordic-inspired small island plate with salmon cream soup and meatballs, a fish fry open sandwich with white fish and cocktail shrimp on rye bread and Moomin Mamma’s “home cooking” with Finnish makaronilaatikko. The dessert menu consists of a Moomin shaved ice, a cloud parfait and a forest blueberry cake. Order a drink such as the color-changing raspberry juice, the strawberry milk and yogurt drink or the 80th anniversary Moomin house drink for a refreshing commemoration.
To visit the cafe, guests either need a ticket for the exhibition or an admission ticket to the observation deck of the Mori Art Museum. Be aware that once guests have left the 52nd floor where the exhibit and the cafe are located, they will not be permitted to go back up.
Moomin-Related Goods
The gallery’s gift shop will be filled with exclusive Moomin merchandise and souvenirs. The official catalogue features over 250 works from the exhibit. Other goods include an original stuffed toy, a Moomin Mamma opera tote bag, bag charms, leaf incense, anniversary keychains, plates, hand mirrors, cookie tins, stamps and original blend tea.
