Over 100 Years of Kimono History

The Marubeni Gallery will host an exhibition featuring Japanese traditional fashion. The exhibit, titled “Unraveling the Evolution of Kimono Styles from Early Photographic Materials: Women’s Traditional Japanese Clothing in the Late Edo and Meiji Periods,” will explore how Japanese clothing developed throughout the Edo and Meiji periods. This exhibition attempts to recreate the clothing of that time by referencing early photographic materials and kimono from the Marubeni Collection, along with Marubeni’s dyeing and weaving research.

On January 17, there will be a special event to complement the exhibition featuring speaker Yumiko Hara on the third floor hall of the Marubeni Building. Hara, who contributed to the launch of fashion-and-lifestyle magazine An-An in 1970, has been a pioneering stylist and has written extensively on how to enjoy wearing traditional Japanese apparel. Visitors can enjoy this free event from 14:00 to 15:00.

The Marubeni Collection consists of ancient dyed and woven textiles such as kimono Noh stage costumes. Marubeni has collected and preserved textile artifacts since its founding in 1858 to the present day. Now, the Marubeni Gallery, which opened in 2021, operated on the concept of creating “a space where beauty from all over the world, past and present, resonates.”
