The science of stress-relief and rest

The Miraikan National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation is holding a special exhibit exploring fatigue and the best strategies to combat stress. “Escape from Fatigue: The Science of Fatigue and Rest” is the 10th installment of its “Mirai Can Now” series, showcasing the latest in research and development.

Fatigue and stress has been a topic of popular discussion recently. In a survey of 100,000 Japanese adults, approximately 78% responded that they were “tired,” and in a survey of children, approximately 52% of junior high school students reported feeling fatigue that lasted for more than a month.

The first part of the exhibition looks at the science behind fatigue, with a detailed explanation of how the feeling of fatigue surfaces, as well as methods for measuring and controlling it. The second half of the exhibition is an interactive zone to explore various methods of rest. Visitors can try out a wide variety of soothing products designed for stress relief, including Zzzn apparel, Fufuly “breathing” pillow and the intriguing Qoobo cat-tail pillow. Guests can also experience digital forest bathing through video projection technology that transforms any room into an instant getaway.
