A New View of City Life
UltraSuperNew Kura art gallery in Shibuya will host Duncan Swann’s “Infinite City” exhibition — a love letter from the artist depicting the people, stories, and quiet beauty of the city of Tokyo.
Duncan Swann is a British/German painter and sculptor based in Tokyo. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe and Japan, and has been shortlisted for the Jerwood Painting Prize and the John Moores Painting Prize. Swann’s work combines Western abstract expressionism with Eastern aesthetics, exploring rhythm and natural forms.
After four years of making purely abstract painting, Swann is making a return to working with the human figure. The concept of “Infinite City” explores life in the city through images of contemporary life, showing people from old photographs and figures from museum collections as if they all exist in the same plane. Swann’s paintings attempt to display everyone who lives or has lived in the city. The exhibition comprises of oil paint and water-based-pigment paintings, all created in the last six months.

“Infinite City” will be on display at UltraSuperNew Kura from December 6 to December 19. Visitors must make a reservation in advance to attend.
