Yufuin Floral Village

Oita Prefecture, Kyushu Region

A pocket-sized Cotswolds-inspired village of stone cottages, character shops and animal cafes in the heart of Yufuin

Overview of Yufuin Floral Village

Yufuin Floral Village is a compact open-air shopping and entertainment complex in Yufuin, Oita Prefecture, modeled on the honey-stone villages of England’s Cotswolds region. Set along stone-paved pathways lined with flowering plants and cottage-style buildings, it sits just off the town’s main shopping street, Yunotsubo Kaido, a short walk from both Yufuin Station and Lake Kinrin. The grounds are free to enter, with individual attractions charging their own fees.

The village’s character leans whimsical and family-friendly. A series of character-themed shops — stocking everything from Studio Ghibli merchandise and Peter Rabbit goods to Alice in Wonderland-themed items — are arranged around a central courtyard. A vintage British MINI and a Hogwarts-inspired building serve as popular photo spots. The overall scale is intimate: most visitors complete a full circuit of the grounds in 20–30 minutes, though browsing the shops and visiting the animal experiences can easily extend a stay to an hour or more.

The two main paid attractions within the village are the Owls Forest and the cat cafe. The Owls Forest is an open-air enclosure housing a variety of owl species — from great grey owls and barn owls to great horned and snowy owls — where visitors can observe and photograph the birds up close and, for a small additional fee, hold one on their arm. The Bengal cat cafe next door charges a separate entry fee and allows visitors to spend time with the resident cats over coffee or a snack.

Elsewhere in the village, smaller animal encounters include goats, ducks, rabbits and squirrels — many of which can be fed with pellets purchased at the entrance. Floral plantings throughout the grounds are maintained to ensure something is in bloom in every season. A hotel, the Yufuin Floral Village Hotel, sits on-site for those wishing to stay overnight.

The village can become very crowded during peak seasons, particularly when tour buses arrive mid-morning. Arriving at or just before opening is the most effective way to experience the grounds at their most photogenic and relaxed.

Best Times To Visit Yufuin Floral Village

The village is open year-round and maintains its floral displays across all seasons. The grounds are at their most atmospheric and photogenic in the early morning before the first tour buses arrive — typically around 10:00. Weekday mornings outside of Japanese public holidays are the least crowded.
