Shirahige Shrine Overview
Situated on the western shore of Lake Biwa in Takashima city, Shiga Prefecture, Shirahige Shrine is one of the most visually striking and atmospherically unique Shinto shrines in the Kansai region. The shrine’s iconic torii gate stands in the waters of Lake Biwa itself, rising directly from the lake’s surface in a composition that draws immediate comparisons to the celebrated floating torii of Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture — making it one of the most photographed scenes in Shiga.
Shirahige Shrine is dedicated to Sarutahiko no Mikoto, a deity associated with guidance, longevity and good fortune, and is considered the oldest shrine in Shiga Prefecture, with its founding traditionally dated to over 2,000 years ago. The shrine serves as the head of all Shirahige shrines across Japan, of which there are said to be around 300.
The best views of the torii are from the lakeshore itself or from the water by boat. At sunrise, when mist rises from the surface of Lake Biwa and the torii is silhouetted against the early morning light, the scene is considered one of the most beautiful in Shiga Prefecture.
The shrine grounds also contain a number of smaller secondary shrines, stone lanterns and ancient cedar trees.
Best Times To Visit Shirahige Shrine
The most celebrated time to visit is at sunrise, when morning mist frequently settles over Lake Biwa and the torii gate emerges dramatically from the water in soft early light. This effect is most pronounced in the cooler months of autumn and winter, when temperature differences between the air and lake surface create the most atmospheric mist conditions. Photographers in particular plan visits specifically around sunrise during October through February for this reason.
Spring brings cherry blossoms to the surrounding lakeshore area, while summer offers long days and clear reflections of the torii in the calm lake waters. Autumn foliage from the hills behind the shrine provides a colorful backdrop from mid-October through November. The shrine can be visited year-round, though weekday visits and early morning arrivals consistently offer the most peaceful experience.
