Nara Park (Deer Park)

A historic park famous for over 1,000 free-roaming deer

A Sprawling Park With Free-Roaming Deer

Nara Park is a sprawling 502-hectare public park located in Nara city, about 45 minutes from Osaka and an hour from Kyoto. Established in 1880, this expansive green space is home to over 1,000 wild sika deer that roam freely throughout the grounds, bowing to visitors in exchange for special deer crackers called shika-senbei. These sacred deer are considered messengers of the gods in Shinto tradition and have been designated as National Treasures of Japan.

The park encompasses several of Nara’s most significant cultural sites, including Todai-ji Temple with its massive bronze Buddha statue, Kasuga Taisha Shrine with its thousands of stone and bronze lanterns, and the five-story pagoda of Kofuku-ji Temple. The deer themselves have become remarkably accustomed to human presence over centuries, creating unique photo opportunities as they wander between ancient temples and under cherry blossom trees. Visitors can purchase deer crackers from vendors throughout the park, though it’s important to note that the deer can be quite assertive when they spot food—bowing politely one moment and nudging insistently the next.

Beyond the deer encounters, Nara Park offers beautiful walking paths, seasonal flowers including cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant foliage in autumn and the serene Ukimido pavilion floating on Sagiike Pond. The park’s blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage and wildlife interaction makes it one of Japan’s most distinctive attractions.

Best Times To Visit Nara Park

Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are ideal times to visit Nara Park.

Summer can be hot and humid, though early mornings provide pleasant conditions and smaller crowds. Winter (December to February) sees fewer tourists and the possibility of snow-dusted deer, creating magical winter scenes, though temperatures can be quite cold. Visiting on weekday mornings, regardless of season, helps avoid the largest tour groups that typically arrive around midday.

How To Get to Nara Park (Deer Park)

From Kyoto, take the JR Nara Line to Nara Station (45 minutes) or the Kintetsu Nara Line to Kintetsu-Nara Station (35 minutes). From Osaka, take the Kintetsu Nara Line from Osaka-Namba Station or the JR Yamatoji Line from Osaka Station to Nara Station. Kintetsu-Nara Station is closer to the park—just a 5-minute walk to the park entrance. From JR Nara Station, it’s about a 20-minute walk or a short bus ride. Once you arrive, follow signs toward Todai-ji Temple, and you’ll encounter deer almost immediately upon entering the park grounds.
