A Historic Shrine and Modern Landmark
Nestled on the slopes of Mount Arakura in Fujiyoshida City, Arakurayama Sengen Park is home to one of Japan’s most photographed landscapes. The park encompasses the historic Arakura Sengen Shrine, the famous Chureito Pagoda and hiking trails that wind through forests adorned with cherry blossoms and autumn foliage. This mountaintop destination offers visitors both cultural heritage and natural beauty, all framed by spectacular views of Mount Fuji.
At the heart of the park lies Arakura Sengen Shrine, founded in 705 CE and dedicated to Konohanasakuya-hime, the goddess of Mount Fuji. The shrine has served as a place of worship for over 1,300 years, with visitors praying for happiness, safe childbirth and protection from evil. A large vermilion torii gate marks the entrance, welcoming guests into the sacred grounds.
The park’s most famous feature is the five-story Chureito Pagoda, built in 1963 as a peace memorial to honor Fujiyoshida citizens who died in wars from the mid-19th century through World War II. Reaching the pagoda requires climbing 398 stone steps from the shrine’s main buildings, though a gentler sloping path offers an alternative route. The observation deck at the pagoda provides the park’s signature view — the red pagoda positioned perfectly with Mount Fuji rising in the distance.
Beyond the main attractions, the park offers hiking trails that continue up Mount Arakura. About 10 minutes past the pagoda, visitors can find a colony of irises that bloom in June, adding purple splashes to the mountain landscape. The trails become steeper toward the summit, but the higher elevations provide even more magnificent views of Mount Fuji and the surrounding Fuji Five Lakes region.
Best Times To Visit Arakurayama Sengen Park
The park is renowned for its seasonal transformations. Over 300 cherry trees burst into pink blooms each mid-April, creating the quintessential Japanese scene that has made this location famous worldwide. From May through summer, fresh green foliage dominates the landscape. Autumn brings spectacular color as maple trees turn vibrant shades of red, orange and gold, typically peaking in early November. Winter offers snow-capped Mount Fuji views with crisp, clear skies.
The park is open 24 hours daily with free admission, allowing flexibility for sunrise and sunset photography. Early morning visits offer the clearest Mount Fuji views and smallest crowds. Mount Fuji visibility is best from November through April when atmospheric conditions are optimal — summer months often bring haze that obscures the mountain.
Cherry blossom season in mid-April attracts massive crowds, with the park implementing crowd control measures including time limits at the observation deck and parking fees. For equally beautiful scenery with fewer visitors, plan your trip for the autumn foliage season in early November. Weekdays are consistently less crowded than weekends throughout the year.
