Exploring One of Japan’s Last Untouched Wilderness Areas
Shiretoko Five Lakes (Shiretoko Goko) offers one of Japan’s most spectacular nature experiences. Located in Shiretoko National Park on the northeastern tip of Hokkaido, this series of five small lakes sits surrounded by virgin forest at the foot of the Shiretoko mountain range. The area earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2005 for its exceptional biodiversity and pristine ecosystem.
The lakes themselves formed from ancient volcanic activity, creating mirror-like bodies of water that reflect Mount Rausu and the surrounding peaks on clear days. Each lake has its own character, connected by well-maintained walking trails that wind through dense forest. Wildlife thrives here, including brown bears, Ezo deer, red foxes and numerous bird species.
Two trail options cater to different preferences and seasons. The elevated wooden boardwalk offers an accessible 800-meter loop requiring no special permits, providing views over the first lake and forest canopy. For a more immersive experience, the ground pathway covers all five lakes over three kilometers, though it requires advance registration and a small fee during peak season (May through October). Guided tours with park rangers are mandatory during certain periods when bear activity increases.
Best Times To Visit Shiretoko Five Lakes
Late spring through early autumn provides the most accessible conditions. May brings fresh green leaves and wildflowers, while summer (June through August) offers the warmest weather, though this is also peak tourist season. September and October showcase brilliant autumn foliage, with maples and other deciduous trees transforming the landscape into shades of red, orange and gold.
Winter access is extremely limited, with the ground pathway closed from November through April due to heavy snow. However, the elevated boardwalk remains open year-round for those prepared for harsh winter conditions. Each season offers unique wildlife viewing opportunities, with bears most active in spring and autumn.
