Where Ancient Rivers Carved the Mountains
Deep in the mountains of Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, Oboke Gorge is one of Japan’s most breathtaking natural landscapes. The gorge’s name, meaning “big dangerous steps,” reflects the area’s jagged rocky walls and the perilous nature of navigating its terrain. Formed by the erosion of the Yoshino River over more than 200 million years, the cliffs are carved from crystalline schist that glows blue-grey on the surface while revealing deep green hues within.
The stretch of the Yoshino River running through the valley is prime whitewater rafting, canyoning and kayaking territory. For those who prefer calmer waters, the Oboke Gorge Sightseeing Boat offers a 30-minute cruise through the canyon. Departures run from 9:00 to 16:30, with the cruise closed during bad weather or high water levels. Admission is ¥1,500 — please check the official website for current pricing. Passengers remove their shoes and sit on tatami mats as guides point out rock formations that resemble animals and explain the area’s geological history.
Beyond the river, the Lapis Oboke rest area near Oboke Station houses both a gem museum and a yokai museum, with a tourist information center, cafe and free foot bath. The museums are open from 9:00 to 17:00, closed on Tuesdays from December to February. Admission is ¥700 for both museums.
Oboke also serves as the gateway to the Iya Valley, where visitors can explore vine bridges, centuries-old thatched farmhouses and some of Shikoku’s most remote scenery.
Best Times To Visit Oboke Gorge
Cherry blossoms color the hillsides around Oboke Station in April, while rare rock azaleas bloom on the cliff faces between late April and early May. Summer brings is peak rafting season. Autumn, particularly mid to late November, transforms the gorge with golden and crimson foliage. In winter, a special kotatsu boat operates from December to February, offering a uniquely cozy way to experience the snow-dusted canyon.
Spring and autumn are the most popular seasons, so book accommodations in advance if visiting during those periods.
