Chichibu Shrine Overview
Chichibu Shrine, located in Saitama Prefecture, is one of the oldest shrines in the Kanto region, with its founding said to date back 2,000 years. Together with Mitsumine Shrine and Hodosan Shrine, it is known as the “Three Shrines of Chichibu” and is cherished as the most important shrine in the Chichibu area.
The shrine’s current buildings were constructed in 1592 with the support of Tokugawa Ieyasu and are well known for their elaborate carvings adorning the main hall, including depictions of creatures like tigers, monkeys and dragons. Many of the carvings were created by the same artists responsible for the decorations at Nikko’s Toshogu Shrine.
The shrine grounds feature an array of impressive sculptures, including the Tsunagi no Ryu (chained dragon), Hokushin no Fukuro (the North Star owl) known to bring academic success, the Kosodate no Tora (child-rearing tiger) and the Ogenki Sanzaru (three monkeys of good health).
The annual Chichibu Night Festival is a UNESCO-listed event and one of Japan’s most celebrated, seamlessly bridging the past and present. Held each December, the parading of floats is listed as part of the national cultural heritage, and the national government has also recognized the shrine’s sacred dance (kagura) as an important cultural asset.
Best Times To Visit Chichibu Shrine
The shrine is surrounded by trees, making for a peaceful atmosphere in the middle of the city — a quality that makes it worth visiting any time of year. That said, timing your visit around one of its festivals makes for a particularly memorable experience.
The most popular time is early December, when the Chichibu Night Festival draws enormous crowds. The main festival days are December 2 and 3, featuring the parading of elaborate floats. Visitors seeking a quieter experience should aim for spring or autumn weekdays, when the wooded grounds are at their most atmospheric and the crowds are thinner.
Other annual events include a rice-planting festival on April 4 and the mid-summer Kawase Festival on July 19–20.
