Hyogo Prefecture, Kansai Region

The world's second-longest suspension bridge connecting Kobe to Awaji Island

Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Overview

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, also known as the Pearl Bridge, is an engineering marvel that spans the Akashi Strait between Kobe on Honshu and Awaji Island. Completed in 1998, this suspension bridge held the world record for the longest central span at 1,991 meters until 2022, when it became the world’s second-longest suspension bridge. The bridge’s two main towers rise approximately 283 meters above sea level, making them nearly as tall as Tokyo Tower (333 meters).

This architectural wonder was designed to withstand earthquakes, strong winds and harsh sea currents. During construction, the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995 actually occurred, which moved the towers and required engineers to extend the bridge’s length by one meter. Despite this challenge, the bridge has proven remarkably resilient and stands as a testament to Japanese engineering excellence.

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge serves both practical and aesthetic purposes. By day, visitors can appreciate its sleek cables and towering presence against the backdrop of the Seto Inland Sea. By night, the bridge transforms into a spectacular light display, with LED illuminations that change colors seasonally and for special occasions. The bridge is also part of the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway, making it a crucial transportation link in the Kansai region.

Visitors can access the bridge’s promenade walkway on the Kobe side, which offers panoramic views of the strait and surrounding areas. For the adventurous, guided tours of the bridge’s maintenance catwalks provide a thrilling perspective from 300 meters above the water.

Best Times To Visit Akashi Kaikyo Bridge

The bridge can be visited year-round, but certain times offer enhanced experiences. Spring (March through May) provides comfortable weather and clear skies ideal for photography. The evening illuminations are particularly stunning during this season, with special light shows often coordinating with cherry blossom season.

Summer evenings feature extended illumination hours, though daytime visits can be hot and humid. Autumn (September through November) offers pleasant temperatures and excellent visibility for viewing both the bridge structure and surrounding seascape. Winter provides crisp, clear days perfect for photography, though it can be quite cold on the exposed promenade.

For the best photographic opportunities, visit during sunset when you can capture both daylight and illuminated views. Special illumination events occur during Golden Week, summer festivals and the year-end holiday season.
