Police in northern India have arrested a man for kidnapping and then selling his newborn grandson on Facebook.
Feroz Khan, 47, took his week-old grandson while his daughter was sleeping at a hospital in Ludhiana city in Punjab state and told her the child had died.
With the help of a nurse and a lab assistant, he then sold the baby for 45,000 rupees ($830) to a local businessman after a deal was struck on Facebook, police said.
The mother, Noori Khan, complained to police after becoming suspicious of her father.
Police arrested the grandfather and the two hospital staff on Tuesday and are searching for the businessman. The baby has been returned to his mother.
“All three people who conspired to sell the child have been arrested and we will be interrogating the businessman who paid the money to buy the baby,” Satish Malhotra, a senior police officer in Ludhiana, told AFP.
The man told police he wanted to sell his daughters’ child in order to arrange a second marriage for her.
