Churaumi Aquarium Overview
Located within Ocean Expo Park in the Motobu area of northern Okinawa, Churaumi Aquarium is one of Japan’s most visited attractions and one of the largest aquariums in the world. Its name comes from the Okinawan word chura, meaning beautiful, and umi, meaning sea — a fitting description for what awaits inside.
The aquarium’s centerpiece is the Kuroshio Sea tank, a massive acrylic-paneled exhibit holding approximately 7,500 cubic meters of water. It is one of the largest aquarium tanks in the world and is home to whale sharks and manta rays swimming alongside thousands of other marine species — a sight that consistently leaves visitors speechless. The tank’s viewing panel, measuring 8.2 meters high and 22.5 meters wide, offers an almost cinematic window into the open ocean.
Beyond the Kuroshio Sea tank, Churaumi features dedicated exhibits on the diversity of Okinawa’s coral reefs, deep-sea creatures found in the surrounding waters and the rich marine ecosystems of the Kuroshio Current. The aquarium is part of a larger park complex that includes a dolphin theater, manatee pool and sea turtle pond, making it a full-day destination for families and marine enthusiasts alike.

Churaumi Aquarium is open year-round, and because it is an indoor attraction, it can be enjoyed comfortably in any season.
Summer (July to August) is the busiest period, particularly during Japanese school holidays. Crowds peak in mid-August, so visiting on weekday mornings is advisable if your schedule allows. The aquarium also draws large numbers during Golden Week (late April to early May), so booking ahead and arriving early is strongly recommended during that window.
