Phoenix Seagaia Resort Overview
Phoenix Seagaia Resort is an integrated resort facility located on the east coast of Miyazaki city, facing the Pacific Ocean. The resort stretches 11 kilometers north to south, set within approximately 700 hectares of coastal black pine forest. At its heart stands the Phoenix Seagaia Ocean Tower, a 43-story, 154-meter-tall hotel that is both the tallest building in Miyazaki Prefecture and the tallest hotel in Kyushu.
The resort is one of the largest multipurpose resort complexes in Kyushu, offering world-class accommodations, hot springs, restaurants, bars, a fitness club, meeting spaces, wedding facilities and the prestigious Phoenix Country Club. Its two golf courses draw enthusiasts from across Asia, including the Tom Watson Golf Course — designed by PGA star Tom Watson — and the Phoenix Country Club, which hosts one of the Japanese Golf Tour’s biggest tournaments every November.
The resort’s history is as dramatic as its scale. Phoenix Seagaia Resort opened in 1993 as Japan’s first designated resort under the Act on Development of Comprehensive Resort Areas, a ¥200 billion public-private venture aimed at creating a world-class tourist destination. The complex once included the Ocean Dome, one of the world’s largest indoor waterparks, featuring a retractable roof, 12,000 square meters of sandy beach and a wave pool six times larger than an Olympic pool — listed in the Guinness World Records as the biggest simulated pool of its kind. The resort filed for bankruptcy in 2001, one of the biggest failures of public-private partnership in Japan, before being acquired and revitalized. The Ocean Dome was demolished in 2017 and the resort has since undergone significant renovation, emerging today as one of Kyushu’s most complete resort destinations.

Best Times To Visit Phoenix Seagaia Resort
Miyazaki is one of Japan’s sunniest prefectures, making the resort enjoyable year-round. Fireworks are launched daily during summer and Christmas seasons, and there are many seasonal gourmet events and participatory programs throughout the year. Spring is a lovely time to visit, with mild temperatures ideal for golf and outdoor activities. From spring to autumn, night golf is available at the courses. Summer brings beach weather and surfing conditions along the Pacific coastline, while autumn and winter remain mild by Japanese standards. Those keen on golf should consider timing a visit around the Phoenix Tournament in November.
