Kintai Bridge

Japan's famous five-arched wooden bridge spanning the Nishiki River in Iwakuni

Kintai Bridge: An Iconic Landmark of Iwakuni

Kintai Bridge is a historical wooden arch bridge in the city of Iwakuni in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The elegant structure makes five bold arches onto massive stone pillars as it crosses over the Nishiki River and is recognized as one of Japan’s Three Famous Bridges and a designated National Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty.

The bridge’s origins trace back to repeated failures to build a flood-proof crossing over the Nishiki River. A more durable structure was finally commissioned by Kikkawa Hiroyoshi, the third feudal lord of Iwakuni. Built in 1673, the bridge stretches approximately 193 meters in total length with a width of 5 meters. Each of the three middle spans measures 35.1 meters while the two end spans measure 34.8 meters. Remarkably, for nearly 300 years the structure stood without the use of metal nails, relying instead on careful wooden joinery and metal banding.

The bridge stood for almost 300 years before collapsing in 1950, when Iwakuni was struck by a violent typhoon. It was faithfully rebuilt in 1953. Beyond the bridge, visitors can enter Kikkou Park, which brings to mind the homes where samurai families once lived. A ropeway from the park also ascends to Iwakuni Castle, offering sweeping views of the bridge and river below.

Best Times To Visit Kintai Bridge

Kintai Bridge is a popular tourist destination particularly during the cherry blossom season in spring and the autumn color change of the Japanese maples. Cherry blossoms typically peak in late March to early April while autumn foliage is at its finest from mid-November. Both seasons draw large crowds, so arriving early in the morning is recommended to beat the rush and get the best photographs.

The bridge is also illuminated at night throughout most of the year until 22:00, making an evening visit a magical experience in any season. Summer can be hot and humid, so bring plenty of water and sun protection if visiting between July and August.
