Kamo Aquarium, officially known as Tsuruoka City Kamo Aquarium, stands as one of Japan’s most unique marine attractions. Located along the scenic coastline of the Sea of Japan in Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, this aquarium has earned international acclaim for housing the world’s largest collection of jellyfish species. Holding the Guinness World Record for the most jellyfish species on display, the facility showcases over 50 different types of jellyfish and has earned its nickname as the “Jellyfish Dream Theater” (Kurage Dream Theater).
The aquarium underwent a major renovation and reopened in 2014, transforming into a modern facility that showcases these ethereal creatures in beautifully lit tanks that highlight their graceful movements. The crown jewel of the collection is the massive 5-meter diameter tank housing thousands of moon jellyfish, creating a mesmerizing display that has become an iconic photo opportunity. Beyond jellyfish, visitors can also encounter seals, sea lions and various local marine species from the Sea of Japan. The facility even features a unique jellyfish ice cream and the famous “Jellyfish Ramen” at its restaurant, allowing visitors to taste these gelatinous creatures in culinary form.

Kamo Aquarium is open year-round, making it an excellent destination regardless of season. However, summer months (July-August) tend to be the busiest due to domestic tourism, so visitors seeking a quieter experience should consider spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October). Winter visits offer the advantage of fewer crowds and the opportunity to enjoy the aquarium’s warmth while appreciating views of the snowy coastline outside. The aquarium is particularly magical during evening hours when the jellyfish tanks are illuminated against the darkening sky. Weekdays generally see lighter crowds than weekends, providing a more relaxed viewing experience.
