Oirase Gorge Overview
Oirase Gorge is a 14-kilometer mountain stream corridor located in Aomori Prefecture, flowing from Lake Towada to the Oirase River. Part of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, this pristine natural wonder showcases one of Japan’s most beautiful forest streams, featuring crystalline waters, moss-covered rocks and numerous waterfalls cascading through ancient beech and cedar forests.
The gorge offers an accessible hiking trail that follows the stream’s entire length, allowing visitors to experience the area’s natural beauty up close. Notable waterfalls along the route include Kumoi no Taki, Shiraki no Taki and the impressive Choshi Otaki, the gorge’s largest waterfall at 7 meters high and 20 meters wide. The well-maintained walking path makes Oirase Gorge suitable for hikers of all skill levels, though the full trail takes approximately four to five hours to complete one way.
What sets Oirase Gorge apart is its remarkably unspoiled character. The area has been protected since 1928, when it was designated as a Natural Monument and Scenic Spot. Motor vehicles are prohibited along much of the stream, preserving the tranquil atmosphere and allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in nature’s sounds — rushing water, rustling leaves and birdsong.
Best Times To Visit Oirase Gorge
Oirase Gorge attracts visitors year-round, but autumn reigns supreme as peak season. Late October typically brings the most spectacular fall foliage, when the surrounding forests transform into vibrant displays of red, orange and yellow. During this period, expect significant crowds and book accommodations well in advance.
Spring and early summer (May through June) offer a different but equally rewarding experience, with fresh green foliage, comfortable temperatures and fewer tourists. The gorge takes on an ethereal quality during this season, with morning mist often hovering over the stream.
Winter visits present unique beauty but require preparation. While parts of the trail close due to snow and ice, accessible sections reveal a serene, frozen landscape. However, facilities are limited and conditions can be challenging for inexperienced winter hikers.
