Where the Sea of Japan Carved Its Masterpiece
Uradome Coast sits in Iwami town at the eastern tip of Tottori Prefecture, stretching roughly 15 kilometers along a ria shoreline renowned for its intricate natural beauty. The rugged cliffs, bluffs, caves and oddly shaped rocks — carved by the waves and snowstorms of the Sea of Japan — create a striking contrast against the white sand beaches and pine trees that line its shores.
The coast has been designated one of Japan’s 100 scenic spots, a national scenic beauty site, a natural monument and forms part of a UNESCO Global Geopark. Often referred to as the “Matsushima of San’in” — a nod to one of Japan’s three celebrated scenic views — it boasts views that genuinely live up to the comparison.
The San’in Kaigan Geopark extends around 120 kilometers across three prefectures — Tottori, Hyogo and Kyoto — overlapping with San’inkaigan National Park. UNESCO declared it a Global Geopark in 2010 due to its unique biodiversity and geological features. The water clarity here is exceptional, reaching up to 25 meters on a clear day, which makes it one of the top spots in Honshu for snorkeling, sea kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.
Between Ajiro and Tajiri Ports, a particularly scenic 3-kilometer stretch features a well-maintained walking path dotted with observation decks, offering ever-changing coastal views. Sightseeing boat tours are another popular option, weaving through sea caves, rock arches and island formations that can only be properly appreciated from the water. Best Times To Visit Uradome Coast
July and August are best for swimming and kayaking, while May and October are ideal for hiking the nature trails when the weather is cool and clear. The swimming beach is open from mid-July to mid-August, with the water consistently rated “AA” for quality. Exact dates vary annually, so check with the local tourism board before visiting.
It’s worth avoiding winter (December–February), as strong waves from the Sea of Japan are dramatic to observe but the sightseeing boats typically stop operating during this period.
