Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple Overview
Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple is one of the most visited religious sites in Japan, drawing over 10 million visitors each year — particularly during the New Year holiday period. Located in Narita city, Chiba Prefecture, the temple complex belongs to the Chisan branch of the Shingon sect of Buddhism and has been a place of worship for over 1,000 years.
Founded in 940 CE, the temple enshrines Fudo Myo-o, a powerful deity in the Buddhist tradition believed to protect against evil and guide practitioners toward enlightenment. The temple is especially well known for its goma fire rituals, in which priests burn wooden sticks as offerings to Fudo Myo-o — a practice performed multiple times daily and open to the public.
The sprawling temple grounds cover roughly 165,000 square meters and include several important structures, including the Great Main Hall (Daihondo), the three-story Heiwa Daitou pagoda and beautifully landscaped gardens. The approach to the temple, Omotesando, is lined with traditional shops and restaurants serving local specialty unagi (eel), making the walk to the main hall an experience in itself.
Best Times To Visit Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple
The most atmospheric time to visit is during Hatsumode, the first few days of the new year, when the temple ranks among the top three most visited sites in Japan for New Year’s pilgrimages. If large crowds are not your thing, however, it is best to avoid early January.
Spring is a quieter and especially scenic time to visit, as cherry blossoms bloom throughout the garden grounds, typically in late March to early April. Autumn foliage from late October through November also transforms the gardens into a vivid tapestry of red and orange.
The Setsubun festival in early February is another popular occasion, featuring bean-throwing ceremonies performed by sumo wrestlers and celebrities — an event that draws large, lively crowds.
