While Michail Gkinis mainly works in other artistic fields, he also brings his unique vision to transforming vintage kimono into wearable art for this personalized session. Winner of the prestigious DFA Design for Asia Award in 2021, Gkinis combines his deep respect for Japan’s textile heritage with contemporary fashion design to carefully curate styling selections tailored to each participant’s individuality. His goal is to inspire creative self-expression and confidence. Wearable Art: Reinterpreting Japanese Aesthetics with Traditional Textiles

Michail Gkinis is a Greek-born fashion designer based in Tokyo. He pursued fashion at the London College of Fashion and was drawn to Japan by its rich textile culture. Since launching his own brand in 2008 at Tokyo Collection, Gkinis has showcased his work globally—including in New York, Paris, India, and UK——and has received numerous awards in Japan and abroad.

Known for blending fashion and art, his work includes collaborations with Wacoal, android designer Hiroshi Ishiguro, and traditional Kyoto crafts. In 2020, he opened his flagship store in Todoroki, Tokyo, and continues to create wearable art that connects tradition with innovation.

Orientation and Design Introduction

The experience begins with a guidance session by fashion designer Michail Gkinis. He will explain the “reinterpretation of Japanese elements” and the background behind the fabrics and designs used. Special attention will be given to the beauty and depth of traditional Japanese weaving and dyeing techniques, providing a deeper understanding of Japan’s world-renowned fabrics.

Personal Styling Experience

Gkinis will assist each participant in selecting fashion items that match their body shape and personal preferences, incorporating elements of traditional Japanese design. With his expert advice, you’ll enjoy discovering the perfect style that reflects your unique identity. The experience takes in Gkinis’ atelier, where soft music plays in the background and drinks are provided, creating a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.

Optional: Outing Photography Plan (approx. 1 hour)

After the styling experience, participants will have the rare opportunity to wear one of Gkinis’ signature “wearable art” creations — mgakimono, a luxurious garment crafted from traditional kimono fabric and reimagined with a contemporary, artistic twist. Each piece is unique, blending heritage textiles with modern aesthetics to create a statement of cultural fusion. After dressing in your mgakimono, you’ll travel just 10 minutes to Todoroki Fudoson Temple, nestled in the lush greenery of Todoroki Valley. This serene and picturesque location offers the perfect backdrop for individual photo sessions, allowing you to capture your experience in an authentically Japanese setting.

The closest station is Todoroki, Tokyo (approximately 20 minutes by taxi from Shibuya, or 30 minutes by train). We can arrange hotel pick-up (optional) or you can meet us directly at the starting point.
