One of the restaurants in the newly opened retail space under the tracks running close to Nakameguro Station, Niwakaya Chosuke Nakameguro is the first Tokyo location of this Fukuoka-based izakaya restaurant. Although Fukuoka is best known for its tonkotsu ramen, one of this laid-back eatery’s specialties is udon. You can get it in a variety of ways, but our favorite (and we’re not alone) is the creamy chicken broth of their tori paitan atsukake udon. It’s a mouthful to say, but quite a tasty mouthful, and has a bit of the comfort food feeling that you’d get from Western-style chicken noodle soup. Plenty of other izakaya dishes round out the menu, including meaty fried ham cutlets and their signature, piled-high servings of shredded cabbage. Of course, plenty of beer, sake and wine to go along with the tasty dishes.
