Yoshiko Shimada: Art and Feminism in Post War Japan

Yoshiko Shimada, a visual artist and art historian, uses printmaking, video, performance, research, and archiving to explore the themes of cultural memory and the role of women in the Asia-Pacific War, as both aggressors and victims. This particular talk will focus on the “Art and Feminism in Post War Japan” speaking on the Women’s Liberation movement from the 1970s to the present and will review important feminist art practices, theories, and exhibitions.

Her art was on display recently at The Aichi Triennale (2019), “Beyond Hiroshima” at Tel Aviv University Art Gallery (2015). She currently lectures on feminism and art at the University of Tokyo.
