Velázquez and the Celebration of Painting: The Golden Age in the Museo del Prado
This exhibition, which is being held in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Spain and Japan, brings together some 70 masterpieces from Spain’s Museo Nacional del Prado and conjures up the heady artistic atmosphere of 17th century Spain under the reign of Philip IV. Among works by such seminal figures of the Spanish Baroque period as Jusepe de Ribera, Francisco de Zurbarán, and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo are seven paintings by the renowned master, Diego Velázquez, whose canvases have influenced generations of painters in Spain and around the world.
