Unkei: The Great Master of Buddhist Sculpture

In commemoration of the reconstruction of the Kohfukuji’s Central Golden Hall in Nara, Tokyo National Museum offers a rare insight into the art of Unkei, one of the most renowned Buddhist sculptors in Japanese history. As a cutting edge artist in 12th century Japan, he created works of art that were so realistic, they almost seemed alive. This exhibition delves into his life as a sculptor and explores his distinctive style, as well as that of his descendants.
