Torigoe Festival

This traditional matsuri is particularly well known for its grand portable shrine and rowdy atmosphere. In addition to all the usual festival fare, Torigoe Matsuri features the heaviest mikoshi portable shrine in Tokyo, weighing almost 4 tons. The decadent golden shrine is carried through the streets all day by hundreds of eager volunteers with some hopefuls so desperate to get their share of good luck from shouldering the holy (and hefty) burden that the crowd has earned itself a rowdy reputation. Other smaller mikoshi representing local towns are also part of the weekend festivities along with traditional dance performances and street vendors.
