Foreign visitors learn Japanese tea ceremony in Tokyo

Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony 2019 – Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum

Experience the Japanese traditional tea culture in a casual, welcoming environment with professional teachers at this annual autumn tradition.

The Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony 2019 will be held at two renowned locations in Tokyo in order to pass along the unique Japanese tradition and cultural entertainment of tea ceremony to people of all ages living in Japan and visiting from abroad including those not familiar with tea ceremony or Japanese traditions and regardless of Japanese language skills.

This year marks the 12th anniversary of the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony which was started in 2008. Approximately 210,000 visitors enjoyed this Japanese traditional cultural entertainment in the past. This special event will be held over two weekends in the autumn – on October 5 and 6 (Saturday & Sunday) at Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum in Koganei City in West Tokyo and on October 19 and 20 (Saturday & Sunday) at Hama-rikyu Gardens in Chuo City in central Tokyo.

During the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony 2019 at the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum guests can participate in an authentic tea gathering at the farmhouse of the Tsunashima Family (¥700; English available) or participate in a tea ceremony for beginners at the farmhouse of the Yoshino Family (¥300 | English translation available). There will also be a traditional culture experience for foreign visitors offering guests the chance to dress in kimono (free) or make traditional crafts (¥500)
