Machida Tenmangu Antique Market
A charming flea market held regularly at Machida Tenmangu, about 40 minutes from Shinjuku by train. On the first of every month (except in January and November) this small market takes over the grounds of the local shrine offering a wide selection of antiques, collectibles, vintage items and just plain junk. It’s definitely worth a visit for retro enthusiasts as many of the regular sellers specialize in Showa Era items such as old kimonos, toys and Japanese ornaments – all of which also make great souvenirs for tourists who prefer digging for the real deal. On a good weather day it’s a bustling market with up to 130 vendors and a friendly atmosphere.
A smaller antique and folk market is held on the third Sunday of each month, and an even smaller mini market on the fifth Sunday of each month .
