Taro Okamotos Tohoku

Taro Okamoto’s Tohoku

In the late 1950s and early 1960s Taro Okamoto became enthralled by the magic of northern Japan as he explored the Tohoku region. He found a raw, almost primeval element to the region which he had otherwise only found in Okinawa previously. His fascination with the region and its culture determined the path of his future artworks and his famous piece in Osaka, “Tower of the Sun”, was a direct result of Tohoku-led inspiration.
