Sumida Character Festival
Come and meet some of Japan’s favorite mascots at Sumida-ku’s “local character” festival. From babies to senior citizens, cute character mascots have long been a popular (and lucrative) method of connecting with people to promote organizations and local regional tourism. 100 of these kawaii creatures will be waddling around Tokyo SkyTree and the Yokogawa Water Park for the two-day festival. Visitors will have a chance to see top mascot stars like Funassi and Kumamon as well as enjoying introductions and performances from lesser-known characters representing districts from across the country. In addition, a variety of booths and stalls will be selling goods and gourmet foods alongside a stamp rally at stores in the local area. Don’t worry, Yubari City’s terrifying Melon Kuma isn’t taking part in this one, so it’s definitely safe to attend!
