“Still” by Nick Knight
Plunge into the floral world of Nick Knight in his first solo exhibition in Japan called “Still.” Esteemed as one of the world’s most influential and visionary photographers, Knight has collaborated with revered designers such as Yohji Yamamoto, John Galliano, Gareth Pugh and Alexander McQueen, as well as with top brands such as Dior, Shiseido, Tom Ford, McQueen and Nike. For the exhibition, Knight brings a personal touch to “Still” through three bodies of work: Flora; Roses, Photo Paintings; and Roses From My Garden.
In his first body of work, Knight selects 15 of his favourite prints from the Flora series, which was first published as a book in 1997, a groundbreaking study on the endless complexities of plants.
Knight transforms reality into the surreal in Roses, Photo Paintings, by capturing the ephemerality of roses. By overlapping painting over photography, Knight and Allan Finamore, a master printer, perfect the signature skill of mixing heat and water during the printing process to make the colours run into a beautiful and dynamic piece.
In his last body of work, Roses From My Garden, Knight wrestles with the transition to modern photography — as it no longer requires the processes of chemistry, science and printing. To manifest this dichotomy, he blends the contemporary with the traditional process of glass plate printing.
Opening reception: November 9 | 19:00–21:00
