Shimokita Tengu Matsuri

Every year, Shimokitazawa comes to life with long-nosed supernatural creatures and traditional spirits for its Tengu Matsuri. These fearsome characters may seem intimidating, but are generally considered guardian spirits who help people in need — as long as they’re pure of heart. The Tengu come out just in time for Setsubun, so festival events include bean throwing, chasing demons away, and a Tengu parade, featuring a giant Tengu head on a float and Tengu walking precariously on very tall geta.
