Shape-Note Singing in Tokyo

Meetups & Workshops, Music

The august harmonies of early American shape-note singing will resound in Tokyo with a two-day singing event. Singers from the United States will share the unrestrained exuberance of this communal art form with new fans in Japan, both Japanese and international. Shape notes, an ingenious American invention patented in 1800, represent musical notes with various shapes— for example a triangle or semicircle – rather than traditional round notes, which actually makes it easier to facilitate large groups to sight-sing a cappella harmony.

In the Saturday singing, a dish to pass during the lunch hour is appreciated, but not necessary. The event is otherwise free. Loaner books and sheet music will be provided. Both days will begin with a short lesson in reading shape notes.
