Japanese shamisen player Momokusu Iwata

Shamisen Concert: Momokusa Iwata

World champion Tsugaru shamisen player and composer Momokusu Iwata is set to perform a concert in Tokyo. Joining him for the first half of the concert are fellow shamisen players, while Iwata will perform with the pianist and percussionist duo Mikisara in the second half.

Iwata, a native of Osaka, discovered the sound of Tsugaru shamisen at age 9 while watching an animation, “Naruto,” on TV, and and he soon began taking lessons. In 2012, he was admitted to Tokyo University of the Arts. In May 2017, Iwata won the Tsugaru Shamisen World Championship, held in Aomori Prefecture. Currently, Momokusu is actively playing in and out of the country with various artists: Tokyo futari, AOI – a trio of university alumni – and a duo with a saxophone player. He plays not only traditional folk songs, but also classic, jazz, rock, pops and dance music.
