Setsubun Tsuinashiki at Zojoji Temple

One of the more popular Setsubun events in the city is held at Zojoji Temple, overlooked by Tokyo Tower. To mark the change of seasons and bring in good luck and fortune for the coming year, the traditional mamemaki bean-throwing ceremony wards off evil spirits and bad luck. Those born in the current Chinese zodiac year (year of the boar), including celebrities and members of the public who applied to take part, dress up in traditional garb and throw soybeans out to the crowds below. You can also purchase the lucky beans to take home for your own personal mamemaki ritual.
