Sengakuji Ako Gishi Sai
Watch this annual festival’s parade, held in honor of the 47 samurai and the master whose death they avenged 300 years ago. The chivalry of Lord Asano’s loyal samurai and the themes of “Gi” (justice) and “Chu” (loyalty) are still highly esteemed by the Japanese. Gishi-sai is the best known example of the samurai code of honor, or bushido. This tale is so renowned that it has been made into two Hollywood movies and been a kabuki standard for centuries.
On the day of the festival, food stalls are set up outside the temple serving Japanese classics like okonomiyaki and takoyaki.
